Anna Schumann, a passion proved for Zouglou

IMG_9220.JPG"World" is the global view of Anna Schumann as far as the Zouglou music is concerned in 20 years. " I believe in a mixture of this rhythm with others for exemple a Zouglou-Jazz , Zouglou of carraïbes etc. ", she says .Anne (also Anna as she demands) speaks about the zouglou as an typical music that can influence the cultural world in a global way ".

She is 33 years old, very cute and has a strong love not only for Ivory Coast but also for its music , Zouglou especially. From her tender voice,we can hear melodies of famous names of Zouglou like “Bilé Didier, Poussin Choc” even “Espoir 2000”. In a hybrid accent marked by English, German and Ivorian language , the word zouglou paves the way for a global understanding : more “world”

"World" is the global view of Anna Schumann as far as the Zouglou music is concerned in 20 years. " I believe in a mixture of this rhythm with others for exemple a Zouglou-Jazz , Zouglou of carraïbes etc. ", she says .Anne (also Anna as she demands) speaks about the zouglou as an typical music that can influence the cultural world in a global way ".

What can be the reason for a German lady to study African culture and literature at the university of London ( England)? She always has a tender smile when asked about that. " I felt in love with this music the first time I came in Ivory Coast. It was in 1996 " she remembers. In that time, she was in vacancy in Abidjan (and to Daloa) to visit some friends and listened for the first time of her life to" this particular music full of humor and truth ". Even if didn’t knowing a word of French language at that time she enjoyed the rhythm . " each time I went to Night Club I could see people dancing and I imitated them". her adventure " 96 " nourishes her tacit desire to know more on this music instead of just enjoy it with “Salopard” or "Esprit Wôyô" sounds. " I wanted to understand the foundations of this music-dance and how its influence people, generation and world generally speaking ".

10 years later, "Anna" came back to Ivory Coast, with a plenty of ideas and now speaking a little bit French. No matter the situation she is more convinced on her objective:” write a doctoral thesis about Zouglou”. During one year (from 2007 till 2008) I met personalities as professor Zadi Zahourou, but also numerous artists who accepted to help me to know more and have a better understand on their motivations, inspirations and visions. “That helped me a lot " she argues with gratitude towards the " zouglou people". She is always spending time in the various libraries of the university and listening the zouglou music what ever the date of release. " I almost listen to all of them. From Bilé Didier until "Sign' Zo" of Yodé and Siro ", she says . this led to : " The Social and political Dynamics of Zouglou Music in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), on 1998-2008 ",a thesis of 320 pages which gives her henceforth (33 years old) the title of " Doctor in African Language and Literature she defended in London in last January 2011.

But for Anna the adventure will not stop there. " I’m leaving for South Africa to work on a new project about the theme, “the new media and the dynamics of the African musics " she announces . A project which takes into account Web and African musics. Meanwhile she "distributes" her thesis around her. " this is my manner to give my cultural support to the scientific community in Ivory Coast " argues Anna Schumann with pride. For her, more than ever, the zouglou needs to extend beyond the French-speaking world. " Zouglou has to conquer the English-speaking world. It's not interesting that this wealth remains limited in a single sphere. Maybe the day the zouglou singers will add English to the local languages, they will also pave the way for a global dimension for Zouglou Music” says Anna with a large smile.
